Working in Fitness Abroad: The Complete 2026 Guide to Relocating for Your Career
The biggest international markets for fitness professionals in 2026 are the Middle East, Australia, the USA
and Europe. Leadership roles such as General Manager, Sales Manager and Fitness Manager travel
best, along with specialist instructors such as Pilates and reformer coaches. Packages vary widely. The
Middle East often includes tax-free salaries plus accommodation and flights, Australia offers strong pay
plus superannuation, and Europe and the USA usually pay a salary with fewer relocation extras. The right
move depends on your experience, your visa options and what you want from the next few years.
Every week we speak to fitness professionals who are seriously thinking about a move abroad, and to operators around the world who need great people. This guide brings together what we've learned helping people make that move well.
Where the international fitness jobs are
The Middle East is one of the fastest-growing fitness markets in the world, driven by government investment, new developments and premium operators expanding across Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait and Qatar. Australia is a sophisticated, competitive market with strong demand in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Canberra. The USA is the world's largest fitness market, with boutique and premium operators hiring in cities such as New York, Miami, Los Angeles and Washington DC. Europe is a collection of very different markets, with the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Ireland and the Nordics among the most active.
Which roles travel best
- General Managers and Assistant General Managers, especially with pre-opening or premium club experience.
- Sales and membership leaders with a proven track record of hitting targets.
- Fitness Managers and Head Coaches who can build and lead a team.
- Pilates, reformer, yoga and barre instructors, who are in particularly high demand in the Middle East and Australia.
- Regional, operations and C-suite leaders for brands entering new markets.
International operators usually want people who bring something they can't easily find locally, whether that's experience with a specific brand model, launch experience or a particular specialism.
What international packages look like
In the Gulf, many roles offer tax-free salaries, and senior packages often include accommodation or a housing allowance, annual flights home, medical insurance and an end-of-service benefit. In Australia, employers pay superannuation on top of salary, currently 12%, and pay rates are generally strong. In Europe, salaries are often quoted monthly rather than annually and may include holiday pay or a 13th month, depending on the country. In the USA, packages usually include health insurance and sometimes a retirement plan, with less paid holiday than most UK workers are used to.
Our blog Fitness GM Salaries by Country compares General Manager packages across the UK, UAE, Australia and the USA, and our International Fitness Salary Calculator gives you a quick benchmark by role and region.
Visas: the part to plan first
Your nationality and the visa routes available to you will decide which markets are realistic. Some moves are relatively straightforward. For example, UK citizens aged 18 to 35 can apply for Australia's Working Holiday visa, and UK and Irish citizens can live and work in each other's countries. Many other moves need an employer to sponsor you, which takes time and usually applies only to more senior or specialist roles.
Visa and immigration rules change often. This is general information only, not immigration advice. Always check the official government website for the country you're moving to and speak to a regulated immigration adviser before you make decisions.
Will your qualifications be recognised?
Fitness qualifications don't automatically transfer between countries. Australia, for example, uses Certificate III and IV in Fitness, the USA relies on nationally accredited certifications, and some Middle Eastern markets have their own registration requirements for fitness professionals. Leadership roles depend far more on experience than certificates, but if you're a coach or instructor, check what's needed before you apply. A good recruiter will know what each employer expects.
How to decide if a move is right for you
• What do you want from the move: money, experience, lifestyle or a step up in responsibility?
• How long do you realistically plan to stay?
• Who is coming with you, and what will they need?
• What happens if it doesn't work out? Have an honest plan B.
• Will this role make you more employable when you come home or move on?
Common mistakes to avoid
• Accepting an offer before you understand the full package, including tax, housing and flights.
• Underestimating visa and relocation timelines, which can add weeks or months.
• Choosing a role purely on salary without understanding the culture and pace of the market.
• Resigning from your current job before your visa and contract are confirmed.
Frequently asked questions
Which country is best for fitness jobs abroad?
It depends on your goals. The Middle East offers some of the strongest packages for leaders, Australia offers a great lifestyle and strong pay, the USA is the biggest market, and Europe offers variety and easy travel.
Can I work in fitness in Australia from the UK?
Yes. UK citizens aged 18 to 35 can apply for Australia's Working Holiday visa, and employer-sponsored visas are available for some skilled roles.
Do fitness jobs in Dubai pay tax-free?
The UAE does not charge personal income tax on salaries, which is why Gulf packages are attractive. Check whether you still have tax obligations in your home country.
